✈️ Cleared for Take Off ✈️

After taking some time away from designing to travel, I wanted to create a project that reflected the ease and joy of the journey itself. This shawl is designed to be simple, soothing, and perfectly portable—the kind of knitting you can pick up on a plane, road trip, or while waiting for your next adventure to begin.

Cleared For Take Off ✈️ is designed with travel in mind, this soothing shawl is the perfect companion for your journeys near and far. Worked sideways from a tiny corner, simple stitches and an easy 2-stitch repeat makes it an ideal project to knit on the go.

The magic comes from pairing one solid yarn with a self-striping or color-changing yarn—the colors shift and unfold as you knit, creating a mesmerizing fabric that looks far more complex than it is. The result is a lightweight, versatile shawl that’s just as beautiful wrapped around your shoulders on a chilly plane as it is draped casually over your favorite outfit.

Skills needed: Knit, increase, slip stitches
Yarn: Fingering weight, one solid and one self-striping or gradient yarn
I used: Emma’s Yarn Super Silky (80% Superwash Merino/20% silk, 400yards/100grams) Main Color (MC) – Whisper – 400 yards

Spincycle Yarns Dyed in the Wool (100% Wool, 200 yards/49 grams)
Coordinating Color (CC) -Light Years – 400 yards (2 skeins)

Needles: US 4/3.5mm 24” circular needles

Notions: 2 Stitch Marker, Tapestry needle, T-pins and for blocking.

Gauge: 22 stitches = 4 inches in knit one below stitch after gentle steam blocking. Although gauge is not crucial for this project, it will affect the finished size and yarn requirements. A looser gauge will result in the use of more yarn.

Finished Size: Triangle, 34” x 52” x 42” after blocking

Construction: Triangular, worked sideways
