Cloisonée
Cloisoneé (cloy-son-nay) is a decorating technique, usually for metalwork, that starts with little compartments that are then filled with enamel or gemstones. I don’t know why, but the whole time I was knitting these, it was all I could think of. These mittens knit up way faster than they seem like they would - partly because they’re worsted weight, and partly because the seemingly complex pattern on the cuff is executed with only one colour at a time. Both versions (with little stained glass windows, and without) are worked with the same pattern - and all this is made possible by knitting into a stitch that is 4 below the one on the needle. It’s magic. These mittens fit closely, since I like my hands cozy. If you like a roomy mitten, knit a larger size, or use a slightly larger needle.
