Originally this scarf was designed as a gift for a friend who had lost her spouse after a long illness. The scarf pattern shows transitions - from the ridges of garter stitch at one end, changing to garter ridges and stockinette, then the smooth stockinette stitch, and into the eyelets and mesh. This is a scarf about flowing and changing and following life’s transitions. On one side of the scarf is a knotted cable, running the length of a scarf. I chose a cable that looked to me like a marriage - two rows of knitting that regularly create a larger knot. Through all the transitions the cable keeps running from one end to the other. The truth of our lives is that there are some reliable elements that are always there, like the cable, but the majority of our lives, like the scarf, change over time.
