Contextural Cowl
by Alexis Hoy
There is something so satisfying about a mitred square: a clean, contained piece of knitting that’s easy to execute and striking in its symmetry. In this cowl, the mitred square is doubled-up and decked out in a whole complement of contrasting textures, thanks to the Wellington Fibres Texture Sampler. A quick, addictive knit that’s sure to impress.
Cowl Options:
- You can omit the Purled Diamonds in the DK and Fingering sections for a simpler knit & look.
- If you prefer not to use a provisional cast-on, cast-on with the bouclé instead and instead of grafting the edges together in the last section of the pattern, seam them with a mattress or back stitch in the DK yarn.
Gauges for each yarn (steam blocked):
- 13 sts & 26 rows = 4” in Garter Stitch with bouclé yarn on US Size 10/ 6 mm
- 16 sts & 36 rows = 4” in Garter Stitch with brushed yarn on US Size 7/ 4.5 mm
- 17 sts & 24 rows = 4” in Purled Diamond Stitch Pattern with DK yarn on US Size 7/ 4.5 mm
- 23 sts & 36 rows= 4” in Purled Diamond Stitch Pattern with fingering yarn on US Size 3/ 3.25 mm
Special Techniques (optional):
- Provisional cast-on
- Kitchener stitch
Stitches Used (Beyond K & P):
- SSK = slip, slip, knit slipped stitches together
- K2tog = knit two stitches together
- KFB = knit into front and back of stitch
