Shirley was attracted to the different motifs in this lacy stitch pattern. She thought they could be used on different parts of the garment. Her vision was for a very elegant pullover with a double taper that would follow the natural curves of the body. For a very feminine feeling Shirley also wanted to add bell cuffs and a large collar that could be worn off the shoulder. She used one motif from the stitch pattern for the edgings including the bottom, sleeve cuffs and collar, then used the total pattern in the main section of the body and sleeves. Because the edging motifs reminded her of a shell, Shirley named this pullover Coquilles.
