Happy Shop Hop 2023!

This pattern was designed for Needle & Skein for the Minnesota Yarn Shop Hop 2023!

Coral reefs are known as the “rainforests of the sea” due to the incredible diversity of life these habitats support. And the corals that compose these vast reef structures are themselves alive! In fact, the Great Barrier Reef is the largest living structure on Earth! So pick up your needles and grow your own treasured coral reef with each stitch of this shawl. You’ll be able to explore the depth and diversity of its colors and textures every time you wear it!

This shawl is worked flat from tip to tip. It begins with just a
handful of cast on stitches and uses simple increases on one
edge to create a large, deep triangular shawl.

As you work through the shawl, the left edge becomes a
beautiful i-cord while the right edge retains a garter texture
that hides the shawl-shaping increases.

Techniques used:

  • Basic lace (knit, purl, yarn over, standard increases and decreases)
  • Working from charts
  • I-cord edging
  • Long-tail cast on
  • Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off

Yarn & Yardage
This shawl was designed to use as much squishy goodness as possible out of 2 skeins of Dream in Color Smooshy with Cashmere. Originally designed with Needle & Skein’s custom MN Yarn Shop Hop hand-dyed colorways in “Quietly Coral” and “In the Depths,” and requires about 775 yards total.

You can substitute any fingering weight yarn and achieve a similar look with one variagated skein and one tonal or semi-solid skein. The possibilities are endless!
