A coranto is one of a family of fast-paced dances from the late Renaissance and Baroque eras. The name is derived from a French word meaning “running.”

Coranto Mitts and the accompanying design, Galliard Cowl are both worked in five shades of natural Suri alpaca with one dyed shade. Both patterns contain some of the same design motifs, making the pair a perfect set for a cold winter day,

This pattern is worked in the round with stitches added to create the thumb. A simple corrugated rib finishes both the wrist and the top edge.

Finished size: 4 1/2 in. (11.43 cm) from wrist to top edge, 4 in. (10.16 cm) wide. (Note: Use smaller/larger needles for smaller/larger size.)

Gauge: 4 in. (10.16 cm) = 32 sts and 32 rnds.
Note: Obtaining both stitch and row gauge is ideal; however, if you have to make a choice, try to get row gauge. Stitch gauge can be achieved through blocking if you are not too far off. Also, try using wooden needles which have more grip on the yarn.

Shade A: Black 150 yrds
Shade B: Dark Brown 20 yrds
Shade C: Fawn 15 yrds
Shade D: Beige 10 yrds
Shade E: White 70 yrds
Shade F: Denim (blue) 30 yrds

Needles: US 2 (2.75mm) and US 4 (3.5mm) needles for preferred method of working small circumferences (i.e. 2 circulars, Magic Loop, or double pointed needles).

Stitch markers, stitch holders, blunt-ended tapestry or yarn needle.
