In August 2022 I won a 1st prize for these gloves in these colours at our local agricultural, craft and produce show. This was a really high honour for me. And as I was encouraged by Cornelia to write the pattern, I am naming them Cornelia’s gloves.
During SWW 2022 I will have these gloves on display at the Tingwall hall as part of the Shetland Guild of Spinners, Knitters, Weavers and Dyers group which I am a member. I thought it would be nice to release this pattern just as SWW 2022 is about to begin so as to share a little bit with knitters around the world.
They are traditional Fair Isle gloves using Shetland wool from Jamieson’s of Shetland Spindrift though you can use any 4ply wool such as Jamieson and Smith’s jumper weight or Aister’oo’. There are more producers of Shetland wool nowadays in Shetland islands and any of their 4ply wool will be suitable for this design.
The thumb is afterthought construction.
The fingers and thumbs length can be adjusted to suit wearer.
There is the option to make fingerless gloves.
Two 25g balls of Spindrift Prussian Blue 726 Shetland wool is required for the main colour as there is a long folded down cosy double cuff.
Only 1 25g ball is required of all other colours.
Jamieson’s of Shetland Spindrift - white 304, granny smith 1140, Black 999, Emerald 792, Granite 122, Cobalt 684.
One colour - is from Jamieson and Smith - 118.
White and Granite are background colours on Fair Isle - so if choosing your own colours make sure you choose contrasting colours to ensure your gloves Fair Isle show nicely against background.
Some other colours are used in very small amounts so it may be a good stash project if you have lots of Shetland wool colours to use.
3mm and 2.75mm dpns - though check gauge as per instructions. Waste yarn for afterthought thumbs. Tapestry needle for weaving in ends. Gloves boards are optional - used traditionally in Shetland for dressing (blocking) our knitting on after washing.
Test Knitting - Cornelia has kindly test knit these and they have also been test knit by Claudia.
