Measure Your Foot: and fill in “L” and “W” as shown in the picture above.
____ = L = Length from back of heel to tip of toe
____ = W = Width around broadest part of the foot
Make A Gauge Swatch:
Most socks that wear well are knit firmly. The needle size you use depends on your yarn thickness.
Consider the following chart when knitting socks:
Cast 20 sts on your needle. Knit one row, purl one row for 4”. Bind off. Wash your swatch like you will wash your socks. After it is dry, measure across the middle 3” and figure your gauge.

Figure The Rest:
_____ = T = L - 2”
_____ = K = W - ½” x G (round this number up to an even number). Note these numbers on next pages
When determining the measurements to use for your socks, keep in mind that the thicker the yarn, the less you need to subtract ½” from “W” to arrive at your “K” number. The reason….thinner fabric stretches more and will result in baggy socks unless you make the fabric smaller.

These are all “T” numbers (actual foot length is 2” more)
