This piece won second place in the first Cherry Tree Hill Design Contest of 2009.

This delicate lace pattern has the great gift of being easy and involving at once. It’s knitted naturally and organically in the round, with a sweet chevron effect that gives a natural scallop to the cast-on and cast-off edges. This design is also called Smoken Cowl and Smokey Jo’s Smoken Cowl.

Skill level: Intermediate

Materials:
450 yd (411 m) of fingering weight yarn. Shown in colour Smoken.

Size 5 (3.75 mm) circular needle 16” (41 cm) long
(or 2 circulars or 1 long circular for Magic Loop) or size to obtain gauge.

Size 7 (4.5 mm) needle for binding off.

“Smokey Jo pulled the lacey cowl up over her curly head and trotted out to the dyeshed once more, huffing at her exertion. Sierra had knitted the cowl in a merry colorway that Smokey Jo had dyed in a kettle long ago. The shaded reds and rust, with licks of indigo and slate, reminded Smokey Jo of a fire in the hearth, so she named it ‘Smoken.’ Unfortunately, there was no hearth-fire today.
