Cozy Calico Blanket
Drawing from patchwork quilt designs, this blanket uses a half-square-triangle colorwork technique to combine cheerful colors with delicate, puff-adorned lace.
This design was inspired by all the quilts my mother made when I was growing up. I have such fond memories of snuggling up under her quilts to read or watch movies… and of building blanket forts in the living room.
How This Blanket Is Made
In this quilt-inspired crochet blanket, classic half square triangles are crocheted with two colors in each round. Two sides are crocheted in one color before changing color on the second chain in the corner. The remaining two sides are crocheted with the new color before joining and turning at the end of the round.
In this way, there’s no need to fasten off your yarn between rounds or carry unused yarn behind your work. Simply change color every time you return to the yarn you dropped previously.
Originally featured in the Winter 2024 issue of Crochet World magazine under the name “A Crocheted Christmas Quilt.”
Pattern is written in US crochet terms.
Skill Level: Intermediate
Concentration Level
Fair Amount of Focus Required
Stitch pattern and colorwork may require fairly constant concentration for the first few squares you make.
Stitches Used
Chain, slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, V-stitches, puff stitches.
Techniques Used
Single crochet join; working in turned rounds; changing color in the middle of a round; sewing using invisible mattress stitch; reading long repeated sequences that use a combination of brackets and asterisks; ability to read crochet stitch charts not necessary but may help.
Finished Measurements (approximate size after blocking)
50.5 inches wide x 62.5 inches long (128.5 cm wide x 159 cm long)
Medium (CYC #4) Weight Yarn
approximately 3600 yards in 7 colors
The sample shown here was made with an H/8/5.00mm crochet hook and Premier Yarns Anti-Pilling Everyday Worsted medium-weight acrylic yarn (180 yds/165 m; 3.5 oz/100 g per skein) in the following colors: #100-01 snow white; #100-07 really red; #100-31 peacock; #100-28 mustard; #100-80 carnation; #100-16 kiwi; #100-65 spruce
Blanket may be made wider or longer by adding extra rows (strips) of Large and Small Square blocks. Each row (strip) will add 12 inches (30.5 cm) to the finished measurements.
Be sure to buy additional yarn if you plan to increase the size of your blanket.
Suggested Yarn Substitutes
Sample was made with medium-weight acrylic yarn, but feel free to substitute the medium-weight yarn of your choice. Wool and cotton would also be good options. Lighter or heavier weight yarns may also be used. A different weight yarn may require a different size hook, as well as more or less yarn than noted. Working with a thinner or thicker yarn may result in different gauge measurements, which will affect the Finished Measurements.
Additional Tools and Materials
Size H/8/5.00mm crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
Tapestry needle
Scissors
4 stitch markers
Gauge
Small square motif: 6 inches (15 cm) square, blocked
Large square motif: 12 inches (30.5 cm) square, blocked
Though exact gauge is not essential, for best appearance it should be close.
I used an H/8/5.00mm crochet hook. Select the hook size that gives the best appearance for your choice of yarn and your tension.
A significantly different gauge may require more or less yarn than listed.
