Cracked Glass
Cracked Glass is inspired by fracture lines on glass, like you might see if you accidentally stepped on a strand of multicoloured holiday lights. This combination of elongated stitches and bias garter stitch patterning is straightforward, but interesting enough to hold your attention as it distorts each colour in the sequence. Work a little bit of the pattern every day and you’ll have a beautiful finished scarf or cowl in no time!
Pattern Description
Designed for 24 stripes in fingering weight, this rectangular scarf or cowl is purling-free and lots of fun to make! It is made seamlessly in one piece and all cables are easily worked without a cable needle. The pattern includes corresponding written instructions for the chart, as well as links to video tutorials for many techniques, so the pattern is accessible to an intermediate knitter.
Instructions for both a scarf and a cowl version are provided in the pattern document. The crochet hook is only required for the cowl’s provisional cast-on, and grafting is also only done to complete the cowl. Neither technique is required to make the scarf version.
Yarn Requirements and Sizing
Approximate finished dimensions (after blocking) with 24 colour sections: 23 cm / 9 inches wide and 180 cm / 70 inches long; this is completely adjustable if desired.
Up to 35 m / 40 yards of fingering-weight yarn is required per colour; however, at the given gauge, most knitters will use approximately 700-800 m / 765-875 yards in total for 24 stripes.
Although this pattern works well for an advent calendar set, you definitely don’t need one — at less than 10g of sock yarn per colour, it’s ideal for leftovers and miniskeins!
