This triangular two-colour, syncopated brioche shawl looks striking in all colour combinations. It uses approximately 365m (400yds) of each of two colours of fingering or sport weight yarn.

The pattern has both written instructions and charts. Detailed descriptions of the more unusual stitches and a photo tutorial for the edging are included.

For a long while I didn’t know what to call this shawl. Then one day I was looking something up on Wikipedia and I came across a type of animal I’d never heard of, yet which seemed to look strangely reminiscent of my shawl design.

From Wikipedia: “Crinoids are marine animals that make up the class Crinoidea, one of the classes of the phylum Echinodermata, which also includes the starfish, brittle stars, sea urchins and sea cucumbers. Those crinoids which in their adult form are attached to the sea bottom by a stalk are commonly called sea lilies, while the unstalked forms are called feather stars”.

The last photo on this page shows one such crinoid.
