Crisp Apple Strudel
These charming fingerless mitts bring to life one of Fraulein Maria’s favorite treats: crisp apple strudel. An off-kilter cable echoes overlapping layers of flaky pastry, and twisted ribbing gives a nod to traditional Bavarian stitch patterns. The cable is made solely of 3x3 right and left crosses, but the final effect is much more complex and striking.
Skill level:
Advanced beginner and up
Recommended yarn:
Little Skein Merino DK — 100% superwash merino — 231 yds per 100g. Shown in colorway “Apple Crisp”.
La Bien Aimée Merino DK — 100% superwash Merino — 252 yds (230 m) per 115 g. Shown in colorways Brown Paper Packages (long mitts) and Blue Satin Sashes (short mitts).
Sizing, based on mitts in La Bien Aimee Merino DK:
Short mitts – 6.5” (16.5 cm) unstretched palm circumference and 7” (18 cm) total length
Long mitts – 6.5” (16.5 cm) unstretched palm circumference and 10.25” (26 cm) total length
Mitts stretch to fit palm circumference of 7.5-8” (19-20.5 cm), with zero or slightly negative ease. Mitts are sized for average female hand, but can easily be made smaller or larger by adjusting cast-on number in increments of 2.
Sample in YOTH Yarns Big Sister worked up fractionally larger.
Gauge:
23 sts and 32 rows over 4” (10 cm) in stockinette st (knit in the round), after blocking. Mitts are knit at a tight gauge for durability and stitch definition.
PLEASE NOTE:
Changes in gauge will affect finished size, look of motifs, and amount of yarn used. To meet these dimensions, be sure to use needle size that gives gauge.
Needles:
Size US 5 (3.75 mm) needles, or size needed to obtain gauge. Sample mitts were knit using two 24” circular needles, with DPNs for thumbs.
Other Materials:
Cable needle, 2-3 thin stitch markers, waste yarn, tapestry needle
Skills needed:
