A couple of years ago I spent a several weeks researching textural stitch patterns and then combining them in order to create lace floral motifs that also had appropriate leaves and stems. I knitted them up in a series of swatches but never managed to fit them in to a particular project that I liked.

Recently, I decided to revisit these patterns. I keep all swatches, notes and graphs for forever so that wasn’t a problem at all. I decided to pick my favorite one and see if I could fit it into a shawl format. It took a little editing of the stitch pattern for each motif, but I was eventually able to arrange them such that they fit perfectly into a single triangle shawl (no central spine).

This shawl is worked from the bottom point upwards and features a field of life sized crocus plants. After blocking, the pictured shawl measures 100” wide x 44” long. Knitting this shawl to a different size is possible and easy, due to the simplicity of the motif repeats. The stitch pattern is given as charts and as written instructions. If you work from the written instructions, you will still need to check the charts minimally for the proper motif placement at the beginning and ending of the shawl.

Yarn recommendation: fingering or lace weight yarn in a solid color. Variegated yarn will obscure the pattern.
