You will need two contrasting colors of a DK weight yarn 200 to 250 yds of each color.

Variegated or self striping is not suited for this design.

For the hat:

You will need 1 skein of each color and a size US 3 (3.25mm) needle. The hat is one size fits most in that it’s 22” in diameter.

But double knitting is more dense than a single layer and you will either end up with a decent beanie or a slouchy toque.

Pattern Premise:
Being adopted, I have always wondered what my heritage might be, even after finding my biological mother in ’97. So, a year ago I got a DNA kit and sent it in and waited and waited and waited…

When the results came back, it verified a few things and raised a few more questions. But, luckily enough, it also paired me with two amazing cousins that had been tracking the family all the way from their immigration to the US from the UK back to their origins in Ireland.

It also makes you see that the DNA ancestry results are only as good as the data it is founded upon. For instance, it lists me as mostly British even though we know one of our primary ancestors lied about being British (he was Irish) to make his passage through England to the Americas easier.

Through my cousins, I was able to find out that our family line can be traced back to the Mayflower. Imagine going from not knowing where you came from to finding out a piece of information like that.

It makes you think about what those immigrants or even the first people making an oceanic crossing were thinking when they were crossing that giant expanse. Nothing but water as far as the eye can see. Not knowing what they would truly find, even those following others. Not knowing if there was anything for them on the other side of that eternal journey. Not knowing if they would even make it. For many, I believe you can say that they perhaps thought they were crossing eternity.

In honor of my Irish heritage, I have designed this double knit cowl, which incorporates the Celtic Eternity Knot. Whatever your heritage, I hope this design makes you think about those that came before and where you yourself are going as you cross your own eternity.
