This is a checklist style pattern and hand knitting directions for an afterthought sock made with the assistance of a circular sock machine (CSM). It has blanks to fill in with your own choice of numbers for the cylinder size, the tension, needle size, heel placement, and ribbing. An alternative version with just the hand knit directions is also included, which can be distributed for no additional charge with completed sock tubes.

This checklist assumes:

• You use a bonnet for set up. (If you don’t, just prep your waste yarn using your chosen method.)
• You have a standard start point on your cylinder to begin and end each round (I use the 3 o’clock position at my right half mark).

Fill in the blanks to make a sock to fit your personal tastes:

• Fill in who the sock is for or the intended size.
• Use the cylinder and tension of your choice to make the circumference of sock desired. (See The CSM Cookbook for extensive directions on sizing socks.)
• If using self striping yarn, plan for specific locations to split the tube so that stripes match exactly.
• Choose the correct size hand knitting needle to finish the sock.
• Determine the heel placement.
• Select the cuff height and ribbing type.

Print a checklist every time you make a sock and you will never forget a step! Patterns can also be laminated or put in sheet protectors and then used with wet or dry erase markers.
