This is a checklist style pattern for use with a hand crank circular sock machine (CSM) for a mock rib hung hem sock with mock rib on the leg and instep. It has blanks to fill in with your own choice of numbers for the cylinder size, tension, mock rib, rounds for the hung hem, leg length, pre-heel length and the foot length.

This checklist assumes:

  • You use a bonnet for set up. (If you don’t, just prep you waste yarn using your chosen method.)
  • You have a standard start point on your cylinder to begin and end each round (I use the 3 o’clock position at my right half mark).
  • Your cylinder is marked to divide it in half for heels and toes. “Front” is the half of the cylinder needles closest to you when standing/sitting in front of the machine, “back” is the half of the cylinder needles farthest from you.
  • You make your heels and toes on the front of the cylinder.
  • Your cylinder is marked to show where to stop when making heel and toe decreases (sometimes called target needles).
  • You know a method for heel and toe increases and decreases. Directions for the Fast and Easy Heel and Toe Increase and Decreases (my preferred method) are included.
  • You know how to create a swatch, measure gauge, and use this information to calculate the number of rows required to make a sock in your desired size (see Ch. 1-2 of the CSM Cookbook on Ravelry for more information).

Print a checklist every time you make a sock and you will never forget a step! Patterns can also be laminated or put in sheet protectors and then used with wet or dry erase markers.

The sample was knit on an Erlbacher Speedster in Knit Picks Stroll Tweed (65% Fine Superwash Merino Wool, 25% Nylon, 10% Donegal) in the color Rabbit Heather.

This pattern is part of The CSM Cookbook, an ebook that includes 12 patterns as well as an illustrated glossary, detailed instructions and a recording sheet for making a gauge swatch, information and a worksheet on sizing socks to fit, finishing instructions, and additional resources.
