Cú Chulainn Scarf

Cú Chulainn is part of my Ardee Collection. This four-piece collection is inspired by the battle between Cú Chulainn and Ferdia in the Irish epic Táin Bó Cúailnge (“Cattle Raid of Cooley”). The entire collection uses super chunky yarn and Celtic motifs to depict the two warriors and the landscape. The inspiration for this pattern is the hero of Ulster; like the Cú, this piece is big, fierce and bold. Drawing on Melissa Leapman’s Cables Untangled, cables weave to depict the warrior twisting into his battle frenzy and his dreaded spear, the Gáe Bolg.
Pay What You Can I’ve introduced a permanent discount scheme that will help keep my designs accessible to a range of budgets while also pricing them in a way that reflects the investment put into my designs and craft.

Using super chunky yarn and size US15/10mm needles, this scarf works up quickly. The first half of the scarf is a series of cable panels, followed by a distinct cable panel for the middle before working panels from the first half in reverse order to mirror the first half. If using Malabrigo Rasta or another hand-dyed yarn, you may want to alternate skeins every couple of rows to avoid any pooling of colour. This pattern comes in two different sizes and is written and charted.
A note about sizes: Size 2 (modelled in pattern images) is longer as it has additional cable panels in it. These are marked in the pattern as ‘Size 2 Only’.
