Cubetcha
If you put three of my patterns in your cart for purchase, the fourth pattern will be free.
Specifics
Cubetcha is a boomerang shaped shawlette that was designed in a solid and speckle, Miss Babs Yummy 2-Ply in Caph (bright pink) and La Bien Aimée Twist Sock in Aimée’s Sweater (the soft speckle.) Singles also work well for this as does any skein of fingering/sock yarn that you love.
The Story
If you follow my Instagram, you know that I’m occasionally tied up in Rubik’s Cubing competitions, surrounded by cubers wearing head mounted video cameras and solving cubes with their feet (gross, right?) or blindfolded.
A few months ago, my 10 year old, who is a Speed Cuber asked if he could go to the Cubing World Championships. Not thinking he’d even qualify (he’s only 10, his personal best is 14 seconds…well away from world record time) I said, “Sure.” But when he came back to me, he had qualified, gotten off the wait list (they admit 1000), and it was in - PARIS. So, watch what you say when you’re absentmindedly knitting!
I told him that if he made the money for his airfare, hotel, and donated 10% to charity, he could go. That was going to end things. Except, he came to me about a knitting design, and spoke to my friend and neighbor, the dyer Gigi Bonin, who does small batches of hand dyed yarn. They struck a deal, we all talked colors, I got some test knitters, and Cubetcha was born.
He chose “Give Kids the World” for his charity. He did the research and has talked about it, even before this. He’s packing yarn skeins for shipping, labeling, and learning about how a business runs. I shouldn’t have been surprised: This is the miser who loaned me $60 from his piggy bank and started charging me compound interest after one week.
“But I gave birth to you!”
“And mommy, I appreciate that. But this is business.”
If you’d like a skein of the Gigi Bonin/Punk Cuber’s collaborative yarn (his 13 year old sister’s name for him), they are here and are even prettier in person. He’s negotiated a cut from her but don’t worry - she can hold her own. In addition, he receives $1 from me for each Cubetcha shawl sold and there are also many lemonade stands in his immediate future.
So, enjoy your Cubetcha, whatever yarn you use. It’s simple to knit and hopefully you’ll want to make more than one! My son also made a video of me doing the cubes and a link is found in the pattern. The pattern is designed for any amount of sock yarn you have and for a special skein of solid, speckled or variegated yarn.
If I make it to Paris, I’ll send you pictures of the 1000 cubers wearing video cameras on their heads! (Really, I’m not kidding.) And think of me over four days of cubing competitions…with bare feet. In summer. And blindfolded. And the Rubik’s Clock. You have no idea.
