Da Yoxie hat
The traditional motif used in this hat is known locally as “Da Whalsa pattern”. It also evolved to become known as “the Churchill pattern” after Winston Churchill wore a vest featuring the design. My great grandfather Hector Rendall was born in 1874 at Wirlie in Clett on the island of Whalsay, eventually moving to Vidlin to raise his family. As everyone knows Whalsay knitters, both past and present, excel at Fair Isle design and colourwork so I’m very proud of my peerie drap o Whalsa blood.

little drop of Whalsay

I would recommend using 100% Shetland wool for best results, the ultimate in keeping you warm.

The pattern is one size adult but the actual size can be changed quite dramatically using larger or smaller needle sizes.
Please pay particular attention to the required tension as my knitting tends to be close.

This design uses 7 shades. MC x 2 balls, CC’s x 1 ball each.
