Damask Mittens
As a lover of all things Austen, I have enjoyed the rise in popularity
of damask over the last few years. There is something so lovely about seeing Regency-inspired prints grace everything from the windows and sofas to the covers of journals and photo albums. The extensive variety of beautiful Regency fabric prints and the range of these intricate and feminine fabric prints was a large part of the
inspiration for the colorwork designs for these mittens. I chose this style of mitten because the back, front, cuff, and even the thumb create the perfect canvases to play with these designs.
FINISHED SIZE About 6½“ hand circumference and 8½” long from CO edge to tip of fingers. To fit a child (see Notes).
YARN Brown Sheep Company Nature Spun Fingering (100% wool;

NEEDLES Size 00 (1.75 mm): set of 4 or 5 double-pointed (dpn). Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.
NOTIONS Markers (m); tapestry needle; waste yarn.
GAUGE 55 sts and 55 rnds = 4” in St st colorwork patts from charts.
NOTES
• The gauge of this project is deliberately tighter than the gauge recommended on the yarn label.
• The mittens may also be worked on two circular needles, or on one circular needle using the magic loop method.
• This project is planned for an exact number of stitches and rounds, so the only option for adjusting size is to change the gauge. For larger mittens, work at a looser gauge on larger needles. Every 4 stitches and 4 rounds fewer in 4 inches (i.e., 51 sts and 51 rnds = 4”, or 47 sts and 47 rnds = 4”) will increase the hand circumference by about ½“, and increase the overall length by about ½”. Work a generous swatch in one of the chart patterns to determine your
new gauge and evaluate whether you like the resulting fabric.
