Fair-Isle patterning makes a surprisingly warm hat, even when worked in a fine yarn. The extra layers of stranded yarns create pockets to hold the heat in close to the head.

Gauge Changes when working Fair-isle: For many people working the fair-isle technique can cause their gauge to tighten; this is caused by the stranding of the yarn too tightly across the back of the work. If you find that this happens to you, try knitting the fair-isle sections of your hat on a larger needle, maybe a 3.5 mm, and use your regular size needle for the plain areas of your tam.
