Dancing Lobster Mitts
These are about as warm and cozy as you could ever hope for fingerless gloves to be. The yarn is knit at a tighter gauge than usual to keep the wind at bay, and they really do. When I first made these, I lived in western Maine USA and did a lot of walking; they really served me well on even the coldest of days. I made them specifically to wear over those cheap, ratty dollar store gloves that everyone has. They’re also great on their own, especially for tasks where you need full use of all your fingers.
The cable pattern is fun- big ovals interlocking with tight spiral cables that run up the center of them. Or, maybe they are conga-dancing lobsters? Can’t say for sure, but your imagination just might let you see it.
Yarn: Aran weight yarn. Shown in Peace Fleece, (200 yds/183 m, 113 g/ 3.99 oz) in “Kamchatka Sea Moss”. Total yardage will depend on desired length.
Gauge: 5 sts/in (20 sts/4in, 20 sts/10cm) in stockinette stitch. Needles: US size 5/3.75 mm DPNs, or size needed to obtain gauge.
Notions: 2 cable needles or extra DPNs for cabling, 3 stitch markers, stitch holders or scrap yarn for thumb gussets.
Size: One size, adult woman’s small: for a mitt measuring roughly 7.5 in/19cm around the palm, above the thumb, with fabric fully stretched. To alter the size by changing yarn or needles: a gauge of 4.5 sts/in (18 sts/4in, 18 sts/10cm) would yield a mitt roughly 8.25in/21cm around, a gauge of 4 sts/in (16 sts/4in, 16 sts/10cm) would yield a mitt roughly 9.5in/24cm around.
Skills: Cast on, cast off, knit in the round on DPNs, knit, purl, cables, place sts on holder or scrap yarn, M1 increase, KFB increase, decreases.
Accessibility Notes: All charted sections also written, 12 point serif font with bolded and underlined headings, no columns (except for abbreviation key).
