Inspiration:
Self-isolation is hard. During the ongoing pandemic, we dive into our creative outlet more than ever. I found peace, contentment knitting my way through anxiety about the unknown. I found a skein of Malabrigo in my stash. This amazing deep, rich, dramatic pink blew me away. My inspiration always seems to come from yarn itself. The yarn was screaming to be made into something spectacular.
Datura is a plant that’s dear to my heart.
My mother, who lives in Poland, is an avid gardener, and she always finds a moment to appreciate the beauty of nature. I can see her now…Strolling through the garden, with her arms pulled back behind her, stopping briefly at every plant to give it respect and admiration. I always enjoyed that peaceful, appreciative quality about my mother. She first pointed out Datura when We lived in Winnipeg, Canada and she came over for a visit. She was surprised to see it in this harsh, cold, unforgiving climate. In Assiniboine Park, in Winnipeg, Datura graciously blooms amongst the Leo Mol sculptures. Its drama is unmistaken. Datura is dramatic, in its elegant usually angelic white appearance but also in its qualities. Being a poisonous plant, when ingested, Datura causes delirium. It was used as a “love” potion in the “witchcraft” era.
The pink of this yarn gave me a similar “dramatic” vibe as Datura. As I was working out this yoke design it became so clear me… “Datura” pullover will bloom love…. Why love? You ask…. Well…We all need a little love during this difficult time, and when first falling in love we all experience a state of “delirium”. Thus, the name.

Gauge:
22st/30 rows in 4”/10cm blocked swatch.
Worked in the round, in St st on size 7 US (4.5mm) needles, or needle size needed to achieve gauge.
Materials:
Main colour (MC): Manos del Uruguay (coffee) is a 70% Merino Wool 30% Silk, 50g (1.8oz), 135m (148yds), DK weight.
Contrast colour (CC): Malabrigo Rios (hollyhock), is a 100% Merino Wool, 100g (3.5oz), 192m (210yds), Aran weight.
Notions:
• Size 7 US (4.5 mm) circulars, 16” (40cm) cord for neck (smaller circumferences), increase cord length as amount of sts increase, DPN’s same size to work sleeves, or needles as needed for preferred alternate methods (e.g. Magic loop, two circulars)
• Size 4 circulars, for bottom garter st edge, DPN’s in same size for sleeves cuff,
• Markers, 1 to denote beginning of the round (different colour), others to denote each wedge of yoke repeat,
• Waste yarn,
• Darning needle to weave in ends,
Level of difficulty: Intermediate
Skills required:
• Reading chart for working stranded colorwork technique,
• Working in the round,
• Purl, knit, St st and reverse St st,
• Simple increases and decreases,
• Cast on, twisted backwards loop cast-on, German twisted cast-on or preferred stretchy cast-on,
• Bind off purl wise,
• German short rows.
Notes about construction:
Knitted top down, using stranded technique and wedge yoke concept. The background is knitted in reverse St st done on the WS side of work.
The idea is contrasting textures. Rios is a 4 ply Aran weight, as opposed to Manos being a single ply with some shine in DK weight. Texture is key to achieving this multidimensional contrast.
Sleeves have options of short or long sleeve with sleeve shaping. Finished in a simple garter st pattern to prevent curling. Length is easily adjustable, knit it full length or cropped.
Pattern does not have waist shaping.
Modifications affect yarn usage.
