“Aber sie steigt aus dem Meer mit allen Töchtern des Nereus,
Und die Klage hebt an um den verherrlichten Sohn.”
“But she ascends from the sea with all the daughters of Nereus,
And the plaint arises for her glorified son.”
The poem “Nänie”, set to music in one of Brahms’ most beautiful choral pieces, describes the Greek goddess Thetis mourning for her lost son Achilles. The knitted garment tries to capture the delicate, ethereal elegance of this scene.
Shimmering panels of color work in Codex are framed by gold edgings and worked using intarsia. The delicate buds of the lace panel could be teardrops, falling and pooling at the feet of the goddess.
