Dawn Mittens
Rivin o da dim is an old Shetland expression meaning daybreak. Here it has lent its name to a pair of mittens in soft colours and soft yarn. The patterns, which are exactly the same as those on the Eshaness sweater, are adapted from the traditional OXO borders in my own way.
Method: the mittens are worked in rounds, from cuff to top, starting with multi-coloured ribbing and then in a simple, repeated, multi-coloured pattern. The thumb gusset is knitted at the side afterwards, with the thumb worked in the pattern as set.
MITTENS: ONE SIZE
Yarn quantities: 30g/1oz (A), 15g/½oz (B), 15g/½oz (C), 10g/¼oz (D), 10g/¼oz (E)
Yarn: Jamieson & Smith: Shetland Supreme Jumper Weight: 50g/1¾oz/182m/199yds and 2-ply Jumper Weight; 25g/¾oz/104m/114yds
Finished measurements: 20cm (7¾in) long, approx. 9cm (3½in) wide
Shades: Supreme: 2003 Shaela (A), 2008 Katmollet (B), 2005 Shetland Black (C) and 2-ply: FC44 Brown Mix (D), 1281 Marled Peachy Orange (E)
Needles: 3mm (UK 11, US 2.5) DPNs
Tension (gauge): 30 sts × 34 rows in pattern on 3mm (UK 11, US 2.5) needles = 10 × 10cm (4 × 4in)
Other: markers, thread for setting aside thumb gusset stitches, darning needle for fastening off ends.
Variation: the yarn can take being knitted on slightly larger needles. If you want to make larger mittens, I would work the multi-coloured ribbing of the cuffs twice and work the entire mittens on 3.5mm (UK 9/10, US 4) needles.
