The Daydream Lily is the newest addition to my floral round yokes collection. This one is called daydream because it’s a little imagined: it only has five petals instead of six.

This pattern introduces something new to the collection. You will knit the colourwork with two colours as usual, but then add a third colour in a textured or fuzzy yarn using embroidery after the knitting is done. It brings the sweater to life in a way that pure knitting can’t quite do as well as keeps the knitting itself relaxing rather than trying to manage 3 colours at the same time.

The colourwork is bold and graphic. The floats are naturally quite long so you have the option to use ladderback jacquard to manage them, and the colourwork continues past the sleeve separation which means you get more of it than in most round yoke designs.
It’s worked in sport-weight yarn, which sits in that sweet spot between intricacy and visible progress. Detailed enough to keep you engaged, quick enough that you won’t lose momentum.

Yarn: Sport weight. Depending on the length of the sweater and shaping option, allow approximately:

Main colour (MC):

• 950 (1040, 1110, 1220, 1280, 1390, 1465, 1570, 1645) m
• 1040 (1135, 1215, 1330, 1400, 1520, 1605, 1715, 1795) yds

Contrast colour (CC):

• 255 (280, 310, 330, 355, 385, 415, 435, 440) m
• 280 (310, 340, 360, 390, 420, 455, 480, 485) yds

Accent colour (AC):

• 40 (40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 65, 65) m
• 45 (45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75, 75) yds

Yarns used in sample (size 2) are

• 3 skeins of The Lamb & Kid Elmer (80% Merino, 20% Cashmere; 366 m 400 yds / 100 g) in Commodore as main colour,
• 2 skeins of Spincycle Yarns Dyed In The Wool (100% Superwash American Wool; 183 m 200 yds / approximately 50 g) in Wallflower as contrast colour
• 1 skein of The Lamb & Kid Birdie (74% Suri Alpaca. 26% Silk; 300 m 328 yds / 50 g) in Fountain as accent colour for embroidery.

Gauge: 22 sts & 30 rows = 10 cm / 4” in stranded colourwork in the round, blocked.

Suggested needles:

• 3.25 mm (US 3) or needle size that gets the gauge; circulars with sharp tips, 60-100 cm / 24-40″ long and (optional) DPNs for small circumference knitting
• 2.75 (US 2) or 1-2 needle size(s) smaller than gauge needles for ribbing.

Notions: Stitch markers, locking stitch markers and/or bobby pins if using Japanese short rows, row counter, stitch holder, tapestry needle, measuring tape, contrasting waste yarn and spare set of circular needles in the same size.

Techniques used: Knitting in round, short rows, stranded knitting, lifted increases, Ladderback jacquard, Duplicate stitch embroidery.

Notes: The sweater is knit in the round, starting with a cast-on at the neckline base. Increases are worked, followed by short rows to raise the back of the neck. Next, the contrast colour is added, and the colourwork chart is followed up to the sleeve and body separation.

The body and sleeves are then worked separately in the round. The body can be shaped or kept straight, and the sleeves are decreased to the wrist. Length of the body and sleeves can be easily adjusted. The hem and cuffs are finished with a 1x1 rib and Icelandic bind-off.

Finally, stitches are picked up around the neckline base to make the neckband and worked to double-height.
