Cowl with death head hawk moth motif (known from the movie silence of the lambs) knitted in the round. You begin with a ribbed cuff. Then knit the mysterious death head hawk moth pattern in fairisle technique with two contrasting colours.

The swatches work as wristwarmers!

Materials:
You need DK Yarn in two contrasting colours. Gauge of 22 stitches by 27 rounds (per 4”/10cm) for colour work in stockinette in the round after blocking.

You will need about 220m in main colour and 115m in contrasting colour. For the swatch in reverse colour scheme, you need another 25m in main colour and 50m in contrasting colour (per piece).

Size
Finished size of the cowl, when measured flat after blocking (width x height):
12.5”/32cm x 9.5’’/24cm without ribbing or 13’’/32cm with ribbing.

Circumference of the cowl, when measured in the round after blocking:
25”/64cm

Variation:
Using Sport weight yarn with a gauge of 24 stitches per 4’’/10cm, the cowl will be shorter and tighter, with a diameter of approximately 23’’/58cm. I advise against using yarn thinner than Sport, as the cowl is pulled over the head and the zebra pattern isn’t particularly stretchy.

What else do you need?

• A circular knitting needle in size US 3-6 / 3-4mm for the cuffs and another in US 3-7 / 3.25-4.25 for the colourwork, either 40’’-50’’/100-120cm for Magic Loop technique or 20’’/50cm with short(!) needle tips.
• Round marker
• 3 repeat markers after 36, 72 and 108 stitches (optional)
• Tapestry needle and scissors

In Runden gestrickter Cowl mit dem Muster eines Totenkopffalters (Bekannt aus dem Film “Das Schweigen der Lämmer”) in Einheitsgröße für DK-Garn. Bitte nimm keine dickere Wolle als DK, sonst wird der Cowl sehr weit. Die Abstände zwischen zwei Farben betragen maximal 9 Maschen, meistens liegen sie eher bei 5 oder weniger.

Die Maschenprobe funktioniert als Handstulpe.

Wolle:
DKGarn in zwei kontrastierenden Farben,
Maschenprobe von 22 Maschen auf 27 Runden auf 10 x 10 cm
In der Hauptfarbe benötigst Du etwa 220 m, in der Kontrastfarbe etwa 115 m.

Maße:
Flach liegend 32 cm breit und (ohne Bündchen) 24 cm hoch, mit Bündchen etwa 32 cm hoch.
Der Durchmesser beträgt 64 cm.

Variation: Mit Wolle in der Stärke Sport (Maschenprobe von 24 Maschen auf 10 cm) wird der Cowl kürzer und enger, im Durchmesser ca. 58 cm. Von dünnerem Garn als Sport rate ich ab, da der Cowl über den Kopf angezogen wird und das Zebramuster nicht allzu elastisch ist.

Was brauchst Du noch?

• Für die Bündchen eine Rundstricknadel in Stärke 3‒4 mm und für den Musterteil eine zweite, eine halbe Nadelstärke höher, Stärke 3,25‒4,25, je nachdem wie fest / locker Du strickst. Länge der Rundstricknadeln: 
entweder 100‒120 cm für Magic-Loop-Technik oder 50 cm und kurze(!) Nadelspitzen.

• evtl. drei Rapportmarkierer nach 36, 72 und 108 Maschen
• Stumpfe Sticknadel zum Vernähen
• Schere
