December
It’s cold in December! Big squishy, lovely quick hats are a must! Especially as last minute high-speed knitted gifts!
December is a ridiculously quick knit. With only around 40 rows working around 40 stitches each… depending on how quickly you knit - this hat could be finished in an evening spent watching a couple of episodes of Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries on Netflix.
Plus it has a pom pom. Which makes it magical. In a sense pom poms are like weird fluffy ball-style unicorn horns. Pom poms are the closest you’ll ever get to being a unicorn. That’s good enough for me actually. Pom poms ftw!
Needles:
A set of 12mm (17US) 16” circular needles (or whatever it takes to get gauge) and a set of 12mm (17US) Double Pointed Needles (DPNs).
Yarn:
1 Skein of Cascade Magnum. Shown in the black #0050 colourway. or 123 yards (112 meters) of super chunky yarn.
Notions:
1 (giant!) stitch marker for marking the start of round. I used one of my rings.
Gauge:
8 stitches and 16 rounds = 4” of stockinette fabric worked in the round.
Size:
20” around at the brim unstretched, and 13” tall from brim to very top of hat. It easily stretches to fit between a 21”-24” head.
How to make a pom pom:
There are so many ways to make a pom pom, I followed the instructions from this youtube video. The yarn is big so I made the template a bit bigger than they suggested.
Big ol’ pom poms out of big ol’ yarn. Love it!

I want to thank Nicola Hodges (@tiny.island.textiles) for tech editing and just tons of
general support.
As with all my for-pay patterns. If you find yourself low on funds please don’t hesitate to send me a message. I’ll be happy to gift the pattern to you!
