Deep Winter Coat is a cabled wrap cardigan designed to carry you through the colder months. It features a wrap-around silhouette, thick hand knit belt, and a deep shawl collar that keeps you cozy while still feeling put together.

Worked in worsted weight yarn held double, the fabric is plush and substantial with a rustic edge that suits the classic shape. It’s a longer, relaxed fit layer you can throw on over everyday clothes, and once the cables are established the knitting settles into a steady, satisfying rhythm.

Design Details

Deep Winter Coat is knit seamlessly from the top down. The back shoulders are cast on separately, then joined along the neckline before working flat to the armholes. The front shoulders are picked up from the back and also worked flat, and once all pieces reach the underarm they are joined and worked together down the body.

The set-in sleeves are created by picking up stitches around the armholes and shaping the sleeve cap with short rows before joining in the round to the cuff.

A wide shawl collar is picked up and worked in 1x1 ribbing with short rows to create its depth and warmth. The optional ribbed belt finishes the wrap style and lets you adjust how the coat sits.

Pattern Highlights

  • Wrap style cardigan with an adjustable fit
  • Deep shawl collar for warmth
  • Substantial fabric without bulky fit
  • Works well for gift knitting or a long-term wardrobe piece

Construction Overview

Deep Winter Coat is knit top down with two strands of worsted held together.

The back shoulders are cast on separately and joined at the neckline, then worked flat to the armholes. Front shoulders are picked up and worked flat to meet the same point. At the underarm the fronts and back are joined and the body continues flat to the hem.

Sleeves are picked up around the armholes, shaped with short rows for a sleeve cap, then worked in the round to the cuffs.

The collar is picked up and worked in 1x1 ribbing with short rows for depth. An optional ribbed belt completes the wrap style.

Yarn Notes

This pattern uses worsted weight yarn held double for a super squishy fabric. We designed it with flexibility in mind and tested multiple yarn types that all meet gauge successfully.

The Farmer’s Daughter Fibers Recollect Worsted – 100% Merino – 210 yds/100g (gold sample)
A bouncy 3-ply merino with excellent stitch definition and a timeless rustic hand. It blooms noticeably after wet blocking, so blocking your swatch is important.

Knit Picks High Desert Worsted – Merino & Rambouillet – 217 yds/100g (grey sample)
Smoother and slightly less rustic with beautiful drape. It benefits from firm pinning and stretching during blocking.

Lion Brand Wool-Ease – 80% Acrylic / 20% Wool – 197 yds/85g
A versatile and budget-friendly option. Because of the acrylic content it has less elasticity, so checking gauge as you knit is helpful.

You can also substitute bulky or super bulky yarn instead of holding worsted double, but achieving gauge is what determines fit.

Choosing Yarn

Because the coat uses two strands held together, yarn choice changes the personality of the finished piece more than usual.

Rustic wools create a structured coat-like fabric.
Smooth merinos drape more and feel softer.
Acrylic blends are lighter and easier care but stretch less.

Swatching is important here. Block the swatch the same way you will block the coat so the cables and length behave as expected.
