Demeter was the mother of Persephone. The girl who was taken to the Underworld as Hades bride. Demeter was so distraught that until her daughter was brought back to her she held off on the harvest starving the humans. Persephone was eventually returned, although not fully. She had consumed a few pomegranate seeds while in the Underworld so she could stay half the year in the land of man and half the year had to return to the Underworld.

This pattern is made using intarsia crochet, you will have floats where you carry the yarn behind. If you want to completely hide them you can use the tapestry crochet method. If you use this for a rug I recommend using intarsia.
