Inspired by the many star shaped patchwork quilt centres I recall from enjoying patchwork as a hobby in the early 90s, I created this poncho with a similar ring of motifs around the neckline.

It’s a lovely comfortable accessory that is sure to be very warm and comforting and work well with a wide range of outfits. It’s easy to throw on and off as needed during the changeable weather we can experience mid-season.

The motifs are enjoyable and quick to make, which is very satisfying, while the poncho’s outer edge stitch repeat is extremely relaxing and ideal for stitching up during a favourite TV series or a good film.

Before you start:

Sizes: one size with easy adjustments listed in Make it your Own section

Tension: 12 sts and 8 rows measure 10x10cm (4x4in) over main stitch pattern using a 4.5 mm hook

Working method: The neckline of the poncho is worked first, as 12 motifs seamed together. The main section is worked around this in concentric rounds with increases and decreases maintaining the shape. A little border is worked around the inner edge of the neckline for a neat finish. Note that the poncho works up as a softly domed shape with a slight flare to the points rather than a flat circle.

Finished measurements
a. Neck width (laid out as worn): 25 cm / 10”
b. Total length (neck to longest point): 70cm / 27.5)” to hemline, plus 3cm / 1.25” to tips of motifs
