Diamonds & Old Lace
This antique pattern features easy knitting rhythms, making it perfect for a first lace project. The edging was commonly used in Victorian times for the hem of baby’s baptismal gown. Pairing it with a traditional diamond pattern creates a connection with our sister knitters who made similar items over a hundred years ago.
Yarn: 440 yds (400 m) of lace weight yarn for scarf; 1200 yds (1100m) for shawl
Needles: 3.25-4mm needles, or size needed for gauge.
Other: Crochet hook for casting-on, about same size as needles
Gauge: ~24 sts per 4”(10 cm) You want a loose fabric with lots of drape, but not so loose that it looks sloppy.
Note for beginners: Unless you have experience knitting with fingering weight yarn, you may want to make the scarf in that weight before attempting to use lace weight yarn. Your scarf will be a bit larger and every bit as beautiful!
