This pattern provides instructions for double-knit heel flaps and heel turns. Although full instructions for a simple sock are included in the pattern, the main focus of the pattern is the heel. Two methods for knitting a double-knit heel flap and turn are provided. One method is quite simple, requires only one strand of yarn and is mostly knit stitches and slipped stitches. The other method is more complex, requires two strands of yarn and offers the opportunity to add a colorworked design to the heel flap. Depending on the method chosen, this pattern is suitable for an intermediate or experienced sock knitter.

Double-knit heels can be added to most cuff-down sock patterns to make the socks more durable. Besides providing two layers of fabric at the heel flap and heel turn, a two-color double-knit heel offers the opportunity to add a color pattern to the heel flap. A small amount of contrasting yarn is required for the two-color heel--25 yards or less.

Three charts for color-worked heel flaps are provided, along with a blank chart that can be used to create original designs.
