Is it a hat or is it a scarf??

Double layer caps which could also be worn as a scarf were worn by many North Sea fishermen. This version is worked in traditional Fair Isle colours, and the two tails are subtly different, another old tradition.

Two Fair Isle patterns are given. You use the same chart for both tails, or mix and match as you please.

Instructions are also given for a single layer hat.

If you want a slightly larger cap, I suggest using a 4 ply/fingering yarn such as Jamison and Smith 2 ply jumper weight. Alternatively extra pattern repeats of 20 stitches can be worked.

For a shorter hat, just leave out a couple of patterns!

Jamieson and Smith’s Heritage 100% Shetland wool, 25 g balls, in the amounts and colours shown below:
For the Single Layer Cap:
2 balls of Fluggy White
1 ball each of Peat, Indigo, Old Gold and Madder
For the Double Layer Cap photographed:
3 balls of Fluggy White
2 balls each of Peat, Indigo, Old Gold and Madder
2.5 mm and 3 mm (US 1 and 2) circular needles for the smaller size
3.25 mm and 3.5 mm (US 3 and 4) circular needles for the larger size
