Dragonhide is the first magical pattern in The Hogwarts Library Collection, a set of 7 accessory designs inspired by books you can find in the Hogwarts library’s stacks. Although the copies of “Dragon Species of Great Britain and Ireland” and “Dragon Breeding for Pleasure and Profit” are likely both checked out and in Hagrid’s hut…

The dragons from the Triwizard Tournament are the basis of the Dragonhide pattern– it reminds me of the colorful wings of the Swedish Short-Snout, the Common Welsh Green, the Chinese Fireball, and the Hungarian Horntail. And you can choose which one you’d like to take on; you don’t have to draw a tiny dragon out of a bag…unless you really want to.

About the pattern:
This shawl is an intermediate pattern; it is worked flat side-to-side in one piece, with short row-shaped wedges and slight curves along the bottom edge. Fun spikes and the delicate texture for the wing membranes complete the dragon-like look.

Samples are made with one skein of fingering weight yarn plus a Sixlet set of matching mini-skeins, but can also be worked with just 2 colors, or stash remnants with different colors for each wedge.

Materials:
1 skein of Knitted Wit Victory Sock (4 oz / 114g = 420 yds) in ‘Oil Slick’
OR 420 yds of fingering weight yarn for the MC.

1 set of Knitted Wit Sixlets ( 6 x ½ oz / 12g = 45 yds each), or 6 Smarties (½ oz / 12g = 45 yds)
OR 6 x 45 yds in different colors of fingering weight yarn
OR 270 yds in one color of fingering weight yarn for CC1 – CC6.

Samples are made with Sixlets in color ‘Hyacinth’ for the Hungarian Horntail, or in ‘Carnelian’ for the Chinese Fireball, or in ‘Tugboat’ for the Swedish Short-Snout, or in ‘Cedar’ for the Welsh Green. You can go light to dark, or the other way on the CC sequence.
