This is a classic DK weight baby cardigan which is easy to make and even easier to wear!

Knitting up quickly in garter stitch with minimal ribbed edgings, this classic cardigan shape features a cosy double-breasted overlap and easy two button fastening with optional waist ties. Instructions are given for both boys’ and girls’ fastenings, so the pattern is truly universal.

Using a classic fuss-free construction, the back is worked without shaping to the shoulders and then joined to the fronts using a three needle bind-off. Buttonholes are worked into the body of one of the fronts and the low profile neckband is quick to work and effective.

The sleeves are picked-up using a simple formula as reference and knitted down to the subtle cuffs, which are wide enough to fit mum’s hand when dressing the baby.

Finally, two springy ties are worked before the side and sleeve seams are whistled closed.

The elegant design features of this garment make it an easy to wear garment which will not swamp the baby or look try-hard, and the instructions have been written with beginner knitters in mind (although it’s a really fun knit for experienced knitters who will enjoy this modern take on a classic wardrobe staple!).
