My inspiration is an early childhood in Caithness, Scotland. Older siblings remember watching the waves crash over the beach at Dunnet Bay from our kitchen window, but my memories are of the flora and fauna at toddler height.

Dunnet Head Hap is a crocheted memory of looking up through the umbrellas of cow parsley and pulling grass seeds off stalks as I tottered down our little country lane.

Whilst this isn’t a fast project to crochet, the result is a squishy, warm shawl that can be doubled over and used as a hap, or even spread out and used as a small lap blanket. The pattern covers three sizes so you can create the perfect sized shawl for you.

The hap is crocheted in the round, from the centre out. After the set-up rows, a 4-round repeat is established. The border uses a similar round repeat as in the main body but is worked in a different colour and uses front post stitches to create a
contrasting and tactile edging.

SIZES
1 (2, 3)
Finished width/height: 112 (128, 144) cm / 44 (50.5, 56.75) in
Finished diagonal: 158 (181, 204) cm / 62.25 (71.25, 80.25) in for wingspan when folded in half diagonally after blocking.

TENSION
The tension is not critical for this project but will affect the amount of yarn used and the size of the finished hap. As an indication, after completing the first 13 rounds, work should measure approximately 23 cm / 9 in square before blocking, and 26 cm / 10 in square after blocking.
