Dusk Light Lace Vest
The Dusk Light vest features a simple and rhythmic old lace stitch called fir cone which creates rows of leaf-like openings through which color and light may play. The vest’s shape is long and lean, though easy to shorten for any taste, and features seed stitch along the sides and back bodice. The seed stitch sides makes it easy to size without undue fretting over maintaining even stitch sets and, as an added bonus, creates color waves similar to feather & fan. Just cast on the recommended number of stitches for a one-size fits all lace panel and pick up and knit the edges in seed on either side afterwards to adjust sizing according to your shape or preference. The design is suitable for all shapes and sizes.
The front of the vest is straight with a natural collar which can either drape open or be buttoned down and the lower sides are left open to help you move with the flow. Optionally, instructions are given to shape the vest at the waist for a more fitted look.
Total yardage is estimated at between 500 - 700 yards, depending on length and yarn used. Gauge, such as it is with mixed yarns, is 5 stitches per inch over seed stitch on 9 US/ 5.5 mm needles.
Bottom back edge measures 26 “/ 99 cm minus seed stitch edging after blocking
Bottom edge of each front measures 13”/ 34 cm minus seed stitch edging post blocking
Bodice Back measures 15”/ 38 cm across after pressing
These measurements should be considered a guide only since I adapted them to my yarn and size (roughly a size 12-14 or large).
It’s not necessary to fix on gauge with this approach since sizing is adjusted through the seed stitch edgings. If, however, you are aiming for a different effect, you may wish to work a swatch over the lace stitch and calculate the measurements post-blocking.
