Early Ears of Corn Strip
I modified the “Ears of Corn” pattern in The Harmony Guides 440 more Knitting Stitches, vol. 3, p.59 for a subtler look with more defined rows of corn. The pattern is still 12 rows but I increased the separation between ears and decreased the ear size. Now 6 of the 12 rows are stockinette stitch: without 3 stockinette rows between corn ears, the pattern looks more like cactus!
This pattern is a multiple of 14 stitches +2 more stitches. 1 row of the 12 has “p2tog tbl” in the repeat but there’s an easy method in the notes for this stitch. There are 4 border stitches on each side.
The sample is 5 inches square and Aunt Lydia’s Classic 10 thread color is “Maize”. The color is too pale in the photo; it’s better in person.
Skills needed: long-tail cast on, knit, k2tog, SSK, YO, purl, p2tog and p2tog tbl (see notes for an easy method) and bind off in knit stitch.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.
110 yards of #10 crochet cotton thread will make 10 inches in the stated gauge in a 52-stitch strip.
