East of Eve Shrug

I like to cover the tops of my arms – it’s a thing I’ve always done, and I feel a little naked without something there. I also really like working with heavier weight yarns – 4 ply isn’t really my bag. I wanted to create something I could wear in the summer using an aran weight yarn that wouldn’t have me sweating to death.
The East of Eve shawl was born.

Using a triangle mesh stitch and a big hook gives a floaty fabric whilst still using an aran weight yarn. Having a ton of hand dyed aran weight yarn, I also wanted a pattern I could use with just one skein, plus some scraps from my stash.

This pattern will comfortable fit sizes 12-20 – one of the features of merino wool is it’s tendency to stretch a little with wear – the shrug may seem a little snug on first wearing, it will soon ease up a little.

The finished size is approx. 50cm wide and 40cm long – if you’d like
to increase or decrease the width (shoulders) you’ll need to do more or less rows – always end on a row 3. If you’d like to increase of decrease the length (back and arms) add/subtract mutiples of 6 from the initial chain. Any changes you make will effect the stitch count for the
cuffs.

This shrug has been named after our friend who sadly passed away recently. I was working on this pattern when I received the news. £1 from every pattern sold will be donated to the Eve Appeal, the gynecological cancer charity.

You’ll need:
• 6.5mm hook
• 100g/166m aran weight varigated merino
• 20/30g (approx. 48m) aran weight merino – plain colour to compliment variegated
• Darning needle
