The “Echinoidea” hat is a textured beanie-style hat which is knitted bottom-up in the round. The hat is knitted in two-color brioche and it is available in three sizes.

Echinoidea is specifically designed for Honer och Eir Varv (Lagom weight) & Nutiden unspun (3-stranded) and it is required to use these exact yarns, as they are quite unique.

Because of the very different textures of the yarns, both sides of the brioche fabric look very different. But since both sides definitely have their charms, the pattern provides various options:

You can decide to either use Varv or Nutiden as the main color for the crown. And depending on the length, the finished hat can either be worn as a single-layer hat or have a double-folded brim that shows the opposite texture of the fabric.

I was fully inspired by the new Varv yarn and wanted to find a way to create a classic ribbed hat, while also showcasing the sturdy and teddy-like Varv fabric.

The hats crown reminds me of the shape of a sea urchin. My family loves searching for fossils, and the fossilized version of the sea urchin is called Echinoidea. That’s why I decided to name this design “Echinoidea”.
