Eksta Socks
Because this pattern comes from a pair of socks, I enjoy varying my interpretation. The pattern isn’t complicated to knit, but it requires a little focus. You will get into it after a while. The two colourways shown above are I vassen (‘In the reeds’), above left, and Eka (a Swedish dinghy), above right.
Method: the socks are worked from the top down on DPNs, with pattern on both the leg and foot. Wrap the yarns around each other carefully when changing rounds. Don’t pull too much, or the work will get hard and unnecessarily tight at the joins between the rounds. The yarn quantities for all the socks and stockings
are calculated for size 41/42 (UK 7–8, US Women’s 9–10, US Men’s 8–9). The instructions are written for DPNs.
SIZE: ADULT
Yarn quantities: 85g/3oz (A), 40g/1¼oz (B)
Yarn: Tukuwool Sock from Tukuwool; 100g/3½oz/320m/350yds
Finished measurements: 19cm (7½in) leg length, 11cm (4¼in) leg width, foot length to suit yourself
Shade Eka: Grey (A), Dark brown (B)
Shade I vassen: Oatmeal (A), Grey-blue (B)
Needles: 3mm (UK 11, US 2.5) DPNs for ribbing and heel, 3.25mm (UK 10, US 3) DPNs for the rest
Tension (gauge): 22 sts × 20 rows in pattern on 3.25mm (UK 10, US 3) needles = 10 × 10cm (4 × 4in)
Other: markers, if desired, darning needle for fastening off ends, spare yarn or stitch holder for holding the stitches of the heel.
Variation: work the sole in a single colour.
