Determined to indoctrinate Rory into their high-society lifestyle, Emily Gilmore, played by Kelly Bishop, persuades Richard to take their granddaughter to their country club after discovering she’s required to participate in a school sport. Despite protests from Lorelai, accusing them of pushing the life she ran away from onto her daughter, Rory discovers that while she may be terrible at golf (and the hat Emily provided makes her a target for teasing), getting to know her grandfather, his world, and his friends is worth exploring. Contrary to what they anticipated, both Richard and Rory have a wonderful time, and begin to understand that they are more alike than they realized. This relationship continued offscreen, with Edward Herrmann saying about Alexis Bledel, “There is something about Audrey Hepburn, too, which is not actorish, it is simply this ‘presence.’ Alexis has this transparency about her—there’s no character except this extraordinary presence. It’s raw. Whatever is said to her has this ripple that goes through her. She’s extraordinary.” The two actors continued their friendship until Herrmann passed away in 2014.
