enchanted tree hat
what? did that light just go ON?
the wee magic elves must be home!
i just knew this tree hat was enchanted.
pull the green tassel and the light goes on
pull the brown tassel and the light goes off
no batteries i promise ♥
its a simple i-cord woven through the tree trunk with
a yellow patch, so when you pull the light switches,
the i-cord slides back and forth to show a “light” going on and off!
(the whole light switch rigamaroo is really optional, you can
just embroider a small yellow light if you’d like the elves to stay home.)
hmmm do i smell cookies baking?
gotta go!

♥ let’s get technical! ♥
Start here with the pattern notes:
Hat is knitted in the round on circular needles. The tree & stars are knitted using a chart & stranded method. The light switch is optional! You could just embroider a little light in the trunk so the elves are always at home.
Size: One size adult average 22” head.
Finished measurements:
11 inches wide x 9.5 inches high measured flat.
Yarns used: Sport weight yarn such as:
MC: Brown Sheep, Nature Spun Sport, 50 g - 184 yds - 168 m, 100% wool. 1 ball each in the following colors:
MC: Ash 720S, (this is the greyish color)
CC1: Butterscotch 124S, (this is the treetop color)
CC2: Storm 114S, (this is the tree trunk color)
CC3: You’ll need 3-4 yards of yellow for the enchanted light. Try using a mini skein, embroidery wool, or I used Knit Picks Palette, Mustard 0633 and held it doubled.
Tension/gauge:
Work 22 sts and 28 rows to measure 4 x 4” in St stitch using US 6 or 4 mm needles with sport weight yarn. NOTE: this is sport weight yarn but I used bigger needles to get DK gauge. Use needles necessary for you to get this gauge ok?
Notions:
A pair of US 5 (3.75 mm) circular needles 16” long
A pair of US 6 (4 mm) circular needles 16” long
A set of US 6 (4 mm) dpns
stitch markers, tapestry needle
Tiny owl stitch dictionary:
CC 1 / CC2 etc: contrasting color 1, contrasting color 2, etc.
dec: decrease(s)
dpns: double pointed needles
i-cord: Cast 2 sts onto one dpn.^ Knit 2 sts as normal. Do not turn work. Keep front facing & slide work to other end of dpn. Stitches are ready to knit again but yarn is on the wrong end. That’s ok!
Gently bring yarn behind work & knit 2 sts again. Repeat from ^.
k: knit
k2tog: knit the next two stitches together.
kfb: knit into front and back of the next stitch.
MC: main color
p: purl
St st: stockinette stitch. When working flat, k 1 row, p 1 row.
