Kate Davies is a prolific knitwear designer who says that cutting a steek into your knitting represents “some sort of final frontier” for even the most intrepid knitters.

I love cardigans and I love a colorwork yoke. So even though I don’t consider myself an expert knitter - maybe because I don’t, I decided that I just had to try a steek and people - I’m HOOKED. I swatched and chopped my knitting three times before deciding that I was ready to do it to a sweater and NONE of those swatches unraveled. I just can’t wait for you to snip your sweater. Let’s go!!! • Spincycle Dream State (100% superwashed American Wool 150 yards/138 meters) for the Contrast Color Contrast Color- Stay Out of the Forest 1 (1, 2, 2, 2, 2) (2, 2, 2, 2) skeins.

Gauge
18 stitches and 28 rounds = 4” / 10 cm in Colorwork Pattern on larger needles. 18 sts and 30 rnds = 4” / 10cm in Stockinette Stitch on larger needles. To create the swatch for this project, CO 53 sts and work Rows 29-44 (maintaining the steek sts at the beginning and end of the rnd) from the Yoke Chart on page 7.

Note: It’s common for knitters to knit more tightly in the round, over a small circumference like a sleeve than they do when knitting over larger fields of sts. If this is a concern for you, consider going up a needle size when you’re knitting the sleeves. It is also common for knitters to knit at a different st and row gauge over a colorwork pattern than plain stockinette stitch. Stranded colorwork will often elongate, having fewer rnds/inch than plain stockinette stitch. When you swatch, test both for the best results.

Suggested Needles*
- US Size 6 / 4 mm circular needle, 16” / 40 cm / length for the neckline AND 24 - 40” / 60-100 cm length (depending on the size you’ve chosen) for the hem ribbing, or needles one size smaller than the gauge needle

• US Size 7 / 4.5 mm circular needle 24 - 40” / 60-100 cm length (depending on the size you’ve chosen) for the sweater yoke and body,or the needle size required to give you the gauge. Double pointed needles of the same sizes suitable for small circumference knitting for the sleeves. Always choose the needle size that you need in order to obtain the pattern’s gauge.
