Unwind and keep warm without abandoning your modern sensibility. Alexis Winslow is known for her bold, graphic designs, and here she’s turned a cozy, short-sleeved batwing coat into a striking statement piece. Despite its generous dimensions, Escher flatters the figure with a colorblock triangle as the slimming focal point and deep ribbing that slants across the hips. The back is worked sideways from a provisional cast on and shaped with short rows; the fabric is then joined to work each sleeve cuff in the round. The ribbing is picked up for lower and upper sections, shaped with increases, and joined with short rows. Short rows also form the shawl collar. A single button allows for fastening the fronts closed. If graphic colorblocking isn’t your style, consider working a single-color version or even substituting reverse stockinette for the Color 3 stripes.
CONSTRUCTION
The body is worked side-to-side from a provisional cast on, then the sides are joined and the left cuff is worked in the round, then finished with a Tubular Bind Off. The right cuff is worked in the opposite direction from the provisional cast on. Stitches are then picked up from the edge of the body for the lower ribbing, and the ribbing is shaped using increases. When the lower ribbing is complete, stitches are picked up along one side edge of the ribbing and placed on hold while additional stitches are picked up along the opposite side edge of the ribbing, then along the body to the held stitches, for the upper ribbing. The upper and lower ribbing are joined by a series of short rows which works 1 stitch from the lower ribbing together with 1 stitch from the upper ribbing. The shoulder and collar are shaped using decreases and short rows.

Fingering weight wool yarn in the following approximate amounts:
610 (730, 865, 1015, 1175) yards of Color 1 (C1)
240 (275, 330, 400, 455) yards of Color 2 (C2)
220 (235, 250, 270, 290) yards of Color 3 (C3)
Brooklyn Tweed Loft (100% American Targhee-Columbia wool; 275 yards/50g):
3 (3, 4, 4, 5) skeins of C1; 1 (1, 1, 1, 2) skein(s) of C2; 1 (1, 2, 2, 2) skein(s) of C3

GAUGE
22 stitches and 38 rows = 4” in stockinette stitch with Size A needle, after blocking
22 stitches and 38 rows = 4” in 2x2 Ribbing with Size B needle, after blocking
NEEDLES
Size A (for Main Fabric):
One pair of straight needles or a 32” circular needle in size needed to obtain gauge listed
Suggested Size: 3¾ mm (US 5)
Size B (for Ribbing):
One 32” circular needle and one set of double-pointed needles (DPNs) in size needed to obtain gauge listed
Suggested Size: 3½ mm (US 4)
32” circular needle can be used instead of DPNs if using the Magic Loop method for working small circumferences in the round (i.e., Sleeves)
FINISHED DIMENSIONS
Width of back at lower ribbing: 32½ (35½, 41½, 47½, 53)“; sized to fit approximately 28-32 (34-38, 40-44, 46-50, 52-56)” chest
