This can be worked in any type yarn you desire depending on what you want to use the square for. You could make 35 or so and sew them together for a very lacy blanket or you could mix them with a traditional granny square with the result being a mix in looks and texture.
I have started a project that mixes them and I believe it will be 18 granny squares and 17 flower squares. I will post updates on my project page as I go along.

You could also use crochet thread with a fine needle (2.0 mm) and it should produce a beautiful doily.
