Evenfall
This design is all about nature and its changing hues. When I first saw these two rich colorways from Rowan, I was reminded of the way colors in the landscape change at dusk as day transitions into night. Nature’s bright greens become more muted shades of blues and purples, reflecting the darkening skies. I used this as an inspiration for the lace design and I selected a mix of patterns that reminded me of tree leaves outlined against the evening sky.
There are two shapes included in this pattern, a crescent shawl and a rectangular scarf. The shawl is worked in one piece from the top down starting with a simple set of garter stitch short rows, followed by the deep lace border. The scarf is worked seamlessly from a temporary cast on down to the two lace ends. Although the lace may look intricate, it uses only basic stitches, making Evenfall a great intro-to-lace project or a fun and easy knit for the more advanced lace knitter.

Size US 7 / 4.50 mm circular needle, 32” / 80 cm long or longer
Size US 8 / 5.00 mm circular needle, 32” / 80 cm long or longer
Size US 10 / 6.00 mm needle (for BO only)
Scarf:
Size US 8 / 5.00 mm needles
Size US 9 / 5.50 mm needle (for BO only)
Waste yarn & crochet hook (for temporary cast on)
Both:
Stitch markers, yarn needle, blocking pins
Pattern Notes:
Crescent:
Firm cast on is important for the crescent because the shawl needs to be supported during blocking to allow the lace points to stretch fully. Although the short row turns use wrapped stitches, the wraps can be simply left as is (unworked) hidden within the garter stitch texture. Circular needle is used to accommodate large number of sts. Do not join; work back and forth
Scarf:
The length of the scarf can be customized by working the garter stitch section longer and the width of the scarf can be changed by casting on extra repeats of the lace pattern (each patt rep requires extra 16 sts cast on; any adjustments will require extra yarn).
The Evenfall pattern is now available as Ravelry download. The pdf was updated to include written row-by-row directions as well as the chart.
